Remembering Yijun Zuo
Yijun Zuo, Professor, passed away on July 12, 2025.
Yijun Zuo was a member of the Department of Statistics and Probability for over 20 years. Yijun
came to MSU in June 2002 as an assistant professor, and was promoted to associate
professor with tenure in 2003 before being elevated to full professor in 2006.
Prior to his arrival at MSU, Yijun spent four years as an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Arizona State University. A native of China, Yijun came to the United States in 1993 and earned master's degrees in applied mathematics, statistics, and computer science from the University of Texas at Dallas before receiving his PhD in statistics in 1998. Yijun was an elected Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and an elected member of the International Statistics Institute.
Yijun, who had been hospitalized since January 2025, made fundamental contributions to the area of nonparametric statistics dealing with depth measures. No work on this topic is published without mentioning his contributions.
A distinquished scholar and an exceptionally dedicated individual, Yijun will be remembered for his generosity and support for his colleagues, as well as his care for junior faculty. His passing is a profound loss for the department and the broader academic community.
