Dr. Jon Wellner presents at John Kinney Memorial Lecture

The Department of Statistics and Probability recently hosted Dr. Jon Wellner for the prestigious 2024 John Kinney Memorial Lecture, an event featuring distinguished experts from the fields of mathematics and statistics.

Dr. Wellner presented his research on nonparametric estimation of s-concave and log-concave densities, as well as Chernoff’s Distribution, to an engaged audience of students and faculty.Hao Zhang, Chair of the Department of Statistics and Probability presenting a plaque to Dr. Jon Wellner.

Dr. Wellner is a Mathematical Statistician known for his research on efficiency bounds for semi-parametric models and limit theorems for stochastic processes. He was a professor of Statistics at the University of Washington from 1983 to 2020 and  has been Professor Emeritus since 2020.

Dr. Wellner is a fellow of several professional societies, including the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS), the American Statistical Association (ASA), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, he is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. In recognition of his scientific achievements, Dr. Wellner was honored as a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion in 2010. He has also delivered notable lectures, including the IMS Medallion Lecture and the Le Cam Lecture.

The next Kenney Lecture will be held in 2027.
