Undergraduate Programs

The Department of Statistics and Probability at Michigan State University offers undergraduate majors in Statistics and Quantitative Risk Analytics.

Undergraduate Major in Statistics

Statistics involves the practice of extracting relevant information from data. From daily health information collected by our Apple or Fitbit watches to massive databases put together by  corporations about prospective customers, data is practically available everywhere. Whether intentionally or inadvertently, we use data to inform us about every aspect of our daily lives. The Department of Statistics and Probability at Michigan State University (MSU) offers the necessary training to equip our undergraduate statistics majors in solving complex world problems by extracting valuable information from data through critical thinking and evidence-based methodologies.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Statisticians and Data Scientists are among the top ten fastest growing occupations in the United States. Our undergraduate program at Michigan State University prepares graduating students for entry and mid-level positions in various areas of applications of statistics including healthcare, business, manufacturing, education, finance, government and so on.

Undergraduate Major in Quantitative Risk Analytics

The Bachelor of Science degree in Quantitative Risk Analytics provides students the quantitative skills necessary for employment in the insurance and risk industry, including a mathematical treatment of probability and statistics, interest-rate theory and financial mathematics, predictive analytics and other data science tools, and insurance operations.

If you are interested in further discussion about the STT majors, please set up an appointment to meet with the Undergraduate Advisor, Dr. Leonard Johnson, using MSU's Student Information System (SIS). You may also email him at john2772@msu.edu.
