Remembering Dr. R.V. Ramamoorthi
R.V. Ramamoorthi, Professor Emeritus, passed away on November 13, 2023.
Professor Ramamoorthi had deep knowledge and endless curiosity about statistics and probability, and mathematics more generally. He produced seminal work, especially in theoretical statistics, including his work on Bayesian Nonparametrics, some of which is collected in the deep and influential book that he wrote with his longtime collaborator J.K. Ghosh.
He was generous in sharing his knowledge and passion for the subject, often in ways that earned him no external accolades. He spent countless hours meeting with graduate students, helping them to be successful on preliminary exams, helping them to understand the finer points of statistical theory as they worked on their dissertation research, and more generally sharing his ideas and wisdom.
His sense of humor and ability to tell compelling stories was apparent to all, and often helped to liven up and humanize sometimes dry academic endeavors like faculty meetings.
Those of us who had the good fortune to be a friend and colleague to R.V. are fortunate to have shared time with such a kind, gentle, and wise soul.
Please read the obituary below by his close friends and colleagues, Vijay Nair, B.V. Rao, and Rajeeva Karandikar.
