Remembering Dennis Gilliland
Dennis Gilliland, Professor Emeritus, passed away on May 2, 2025.
Dennis Gilliland was a dedicated member of the Department of Statistics and Probability
for nearly 50 years from 1967-2016. He served as department chair and director of
the Statistical Consulting Service.
Dennis’ impact on the profession and especially on those who had the good fortune to interact with him is profound. He guided 12 students to their doctorate in statistics, and served on countless other doctoral guidance committees in statistics and many other disciplines.
Dennis’ research in both theoretical and applied areas had real impact on many fields. He was an excellent and innovative instructor in statistics and probability at all levels, with thousands of students learning from him. Along with Connie Page, Dennis founded the Center for Statistical Training and Consulting (CSTAT) at MSU and directed CSTAT during its initial years.
Dennis was mathematically gifted and loved mathematics and statistics, but what set him apart was his kindness and generosity. People who knew Dennis quickly realized that he was selfless and not judgmental, which played a large role in his ability to teach and guide students and colleagues at all levels.
