Finley selected as 2024 ASA Fellow

The American Statistical Association has announced the 2024 ASA Fellows, a prestigious distinction presented to 47 members this year, including Dr. Andrew Finley, professor in the Department of Statistics and Probability (STT). Fellows are honored for their professional contributions, leadership, and commitment to the field of statistical science. The designation of ASA Fellow has been a significant honor for nearly 100 years.

“I am honored to be named an ASA Fellow and grateful to my mentors and family for their guidance and support throughout my education and career,” said Dr. Finley, who holds a joint appointment in the departments of Forestry and STT.  “Also, my deepest thanks to colleagues who wrote on my behalf and to the ASA Fellow selection committee.”

Dr. Finley’s interests lie in the fields of natural resource inventory, Bayesian statistics, spatial statistics, and statistical computing. In terms of application areas, his research focuses on spatio-temporal modeling of important economic and ecological forest attributes, indices of biodiversity, and ecological systems. A central theme in his research is the use of hierarchical models to integrate information from disparate sources to improve inference and predictions. https://www.canr.msu.edu/people/andrew_o_finley

“The American Statistical Associate (ASA) Fellow is a significant honor that recognizes outstanding contributions to statistical science,” said Dr. Hao Zhang, STT department chair. “ASA elects up to one third of one percent of the total membership as fellows each year. This recognition honors Professor Finley’s outstanding contributions to statistical methodology and applications. Please join me in congratulating Andy!’’
