Profs. Maiti and Viens part of a multi-institution NSF award to develop cyberinfrastructure for nuclear physics.

STT professors Taps Maiti and Frederi Viens, who work on methodology for and applications of Bayesian statistics, are part of a $3.7 million project just awarded from the National Science Foundation's program on Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation. The project will create a software framework for helping the international community of nuclear physicists plan, design, and interpret their experiments. By using Bayesian methodologies, the intent is to quantify the uncertainties in the models used to explain fundamental properties of matter, and to help make predictions more accurately by combining models. The collaboration involves 11 scholars, five from MSU including three members of the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, three at Ohio State, two at Northwestern, and the team leader, Daniel Phillips, at Ohio University.
